ITUC General Secretary addresses Congress

Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the ITUC addressed Congress this morning expressing union solidarity across the globe.

She talked about the importance of unions working globally to protect workers given increasing globalisation and the rise of global corporations and new technologies, and said that ‘labour is not a commodity’, stressing the role of unions in defence of working people.

Sharan reminded Congress about the urgent need for addressing climate change, pointing out the impact that this is having already upon many countries. She also though stressed the existential issue that climate change has for unions, stating ‘there are no jobs on a dead planet’.

She argued for a ‘new social contract’ and emphasised the importance of education across the world.
